Detailed description of Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club

Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club is an 18-hole public golf course located in Front Royal, Virginia.

Blue Ridge Shadows golf course first opened for play in March 2007. The golf course was designed by Thomas E. Clark.

Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Clubhas been named one of the finest upscale daily fee public golf courses in Virginia. The golf course is located in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Skyline Drive and the scenic Shenandoah Valley.

The routing takes advantage of some of the most beautiful scenery on the east coast - the Shenandoah Valley. Holes are sited through hardwood forests, split fairways, double greens, elevation changes and a 60 foot waterfall!

The first hole really sets the tone for the course. Set atop a small knoll, your view of Skyline Drive is great, but you also face a split fairway, (aim for the right). The downhill second shot must find the green instead of the pond on the left of the green. As you make your way around the front nine, you'll hit a variety of shots.

Moving onto 10 brings a 100 foot drop in elevation with two water hazards flanking the hole. Once your tee shot finds the fairway, you can breathe a little easier, although just for a short while.

The golf course at Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club plays to 7,315 yards from the back tees. The course rating is a whopping 75.5 with a slope rating of 143. Par is 72.

With 5 sets of tees from 4,909 -7,340 yards, Blue Ridge Shadows is enjoyable and challenging for the novice golfer, the more seasoned amateur as well as professional players. It's a Mid-Atlantic golfer's delight.

Black tees: par-72, 7,315 yards, 75.5/143

Blue tees: par-72, 6,787 yards, 73.1/138

White tees: par-72, 6,204 yards, 70.4/130

Gold tees: par-72, 5,551 yards, 68.2/122

Red tees: par-72, 5,006 yards, 70.0/120

Like the layout and have played there a couple of times a year for a few years. They started redoing the traps, maybe 8-9 holes have been done, but they told you to drop if you landed in traps that did not have new sand then a free drop. It can be challenging with only a handful of flat holes. With the Blue Ridge Mountains all around it is a very pretty course, especially in the fall.

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Played here June 30, 2016, after a long drive from northern MD, to use a gift certificate. As prior reviews show, this course has good bones, and some stunning views. Sadly, however, of all of the good stuff is overshadowed (pun intended) by the shabby course conditions. Same old sad story - management company being changed, and outgoing outfit spends only the bare minimum on maintenance. As a result, bunkers are especially bad, with no visible upkeep - sizeable weeds growing out of the sand. Similarly, rough is VERY rough: weeds and clover abound. Interestingly, fairways and greens were pretty good (putting a bit slow, but OK). Also, if there is a ball-washer on the course, we never found it! The layout is excellent, with a nice mix of terrain change, and I can see why earlier reviewers were so positive. Sorry we didn't see the course at its best. Also, we found it to be NOISY! There is home construction progress, so there's all the cacaphony of trucks roaring, 'dozers clanking, hammers pounding, accompanied by the steady rhythm of nail guns. Not exactly relaxing... On the bright side, we were very impressed with the staff: all eager to please, very welcoming, and just nice people. Don't know that we'll ever get back down there, but sure hope the managers do justice to what can be a fine facility.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend this course

I've played the course a handful of times since it opened. Fun course to play and great scenery. I'm a little disappointed in conditions of the course. Greens had been aerated a few weeks prior and had not recovered all the way. Several greens had been scalped at change in slope. Still enjoyed the experience.

Several blind shots on the course. A few that have water involved. Tee times should be adhered to. We had a time and were pushed back by some members who decided to come out and tee it up. Starter didn't hold our spot or bother to explain any nuances or anything really about the course. So we were trapped behind some members, which was good to the extent that it was not marked very well. It's highly marketed and you would think that they would be more traveler friendly. The maintainance crews were doing their job which included running up and down the fairway mowing at noon. Had a great lunch/dinner over at their restaurant in the hotel on site. Highly recommend it. Fantastic food. Good golf other than the tee time issue and the maintainence crew gobbling up two golf balls. We probably shouldn't have hit it in the rough anyway.

We played it on a relatively nice day for January. Every golfer wanted to get out that day, so the slow play was not unexpected. Despite some piles of snow in the parking lot, the course was relatively dry except for a few fairways. The front and back nines have very different terrain but both have some very nice views. I would like to go back and play it in season to get a better idea of its true conditions.

This course is absolutely beautiful. I have played it many times and love the layout and challenge. The staff are always helpful and friendly. There is also a great Holiday Inn located on the property. It is a great place for an outing and close enough to Metro DC (60 miles) to make it esay to play on the weekends.
